NVIDIA is the safest local route; CPU-only is a test route, not a promise.
Apple Silicon can be effective with supported engines. Windows AMD or Intel graphics may fall back to CPU for PyTorch engines. Intel Mac support is more limited.
Practical starting points
| System | Expectation | Recommended first move |
|---|---|---|
| NVIDIA GPU + 16–32 GB RAM | Strongest general local route | Start with a smaller supported engine |
| Apple Silicon + 16 GB RAM | Potentially good; engine-dependent | Choose an Apple-supported backend |
| Windows AMD/Intel GPU | Some engines may use CPU | Verify the backend before large downloads |
| CPU-only + 16 GB RAM | Possible, often slow | Use a short sample or hosted GPU |
| Intel Mac | Limited local route | Consider remote backend or hosted tool |
Why there is no single minimum specification
VoiceStudio orchestrates multiple engines rather than enforcing one model. Each engine has different model sizes and acceleration support. A small TTS test and a long multi-speaker dub do not have the same memory or runtime profile.
RAM and storage
We recommend treating 16 GB system memory as a practical floor for exploration and 32 GB as a more comfortable working target. This is editorial guidance, not an official universal minimum. Keep additional disk space available for model files and generated audio.
GPU versus CPU
The project’s official performance guide states that CPU inference may be 10–50 times slower than GPU inference. That range depends on engine and hardware, but it is enough to change a production decision.
Recommended validation workflow
- Select one engine known to support your platform.
- Download only the model needed for that engine.
- Generate a 20–60 second representative script.
- Record generation time, memory behavior, and output defects.
- Repeat with your target language and voice type.
- Scale only after the sample meets your quality and time limits.
